INDIVIDUAL COURSE COMPONENTS
Patternmaking, construction, drawing, textiles, history of fashion, design development, fabric printing, millinery, digital media, computer aided patternmaking, business studies, designer stretch wear, film and stage costuming, glamour wear, designing a collection, industry placements.
Academic Year One
In the first year, students begin to develop an understanding of the technical
aspects of patternmaking; garment and millinery design, garment construction
and the properties and applications of different fabrics.
In the theory components, students are introduced to the fabrics, yarns and fibres used in modern textiles and study the historical influences that have affected fashion design.
In the design development workshops students are able to explore their creativity in drawing and fabric printing ranges by experimenting with a ranges of colours, materials, textures and techniques.
Academic Year TwoIn year two further emphases is placed on construction and patternmaking. Creative expression and basic skill sets are consolidated as students take on more technical and complex projects and designs. The computer and pattern assisted design (PAD) software is introduced as students are taught how to produce a range of patterns using the latest digital technology.
The course incorporates a Business Studies component that gives new designers the vital skills to operate a business and market themselves and their products to prospective employers and clients.
The students work together to produce garments for D&A’s annual Fashion
and Visual Show. This exposure gives the students the opportunity to showcase
their work to an audience of industry.
There is an option to exit after this year with a Diploma of Fashion
Academic Year Three
The Diploma of Fashion Design (Advanced) provides an opportunity for students to pursue advanced studies in specialist areas. Students are mentored and guided by tutors throughout the course and participation in an internship is a course requirement.
As students are able to translate their own ideas into innovative design concepts
and construct complex well-finished industry standard garments, each graduate
student produces an entire collection of garments during the programme, culminating
in a visual display of their talents at the College’s annual Fashion and
Visual Show.
Students that successfully complete this year receive a Diploma of Fashion (Advanced)
